Sky Terrace – An astrological-analytical look at the stars, planetary movements, seasonal phenomena, and the world at large, by Uli Mai

Saturn’s Dark Night – this Solstice, the Ringplanet enters Capricorn

Time to fasten your seat belt. We’re plunging into darkness! Around December 21st, solar power reaches its lowest point in the Northern hemisphere: It’s the longest night. After that, daylight grows again. Winter solstice is in fact a turning point, a new beginning. It has been celebrated by many cultures as the rebirth of the light. Christmas was placed here as a concession to those who preferred the cycles of life to an invisible god…
Saturn is far away from the light. It rotates in dark, icy space, at a medium distance of 1,43 billion kilometers from the Sun. As the last planet visible with the naked eye, Saturn stands like a sentinel between the visible, faster moving planets, and the vastness beyond. In Astrology, the ringed planet is said to be the Lord of Karma. Simply put, Saturn embodies the law of cause and effect. Action – reaction. It’s the strict teacher, or, the auditing guy.
When Saturn touches your birth chart by transit, expect lessens in maturation, in how you overcome obstacles, how you build things up. It tests your resolve. Do you walk your talk? Do you take up a challenge or do you find excuses? When Saturn changes signs, we can expect a noticable shift in the social, economic, and political debate and agenda.
Saturn is going to spend almost three years in Capricorn, from Dec. 20th, 2017, to December 16th, 2020. Capricorn is the sign Saturn rules and functions best in. It stands for discipline, authority, patience, responsibility. With Saturn in Capricorn, old age comes to mind, winter: a time when you reap what you did, or did not, sow. It’s about consequences, no more and no less, and responsibility.
The last time Saturn entered Capricorn was in 1988. When it left three years later, the whole world had changed. The sudden collapse of the Eastern block was – astrologically – due to the meeting of Saturn with Uranus, the planet of lightning, shock, and revolution. This time, in 2020, Saturn will meet Pluto, the planet of slow, inexorable transformation. This meeting spells profound changes in politics, business, and the world at large – even the physical world, earth changes.
In the next three years, some harsh realizations about the finality of things are coming up. Resources are finite. Earth is finite. Currently, we use the equivalent of 1.6 Earths a year. On the other hand, you will be able to make a lot out of less, with discipline, and ingenuity. Quality will be more in demand. Craftsmanship will soar. There’s beauty in repairing things, in having skills, not just consuming. Experience will be valued more… the classics!
There will be a turn towards conservatism, or, conservation. People will yearn for something real again, for loyalty, commitment, moral codes, even formalities. There’s a danger, too, of people bowing too much to authority, or become authoritarians themselves. As material pressure is mounting, many will get caught in the treadmill, or obsess over status and career. Police, the state, big corporations may become more oppressive and controlling.
The way these changes go is partially up to us. More control and austerity, or more creativity, loyalty, and building something real, getting down to earth in a good way? Winter is coming. Time to gather round the fireplace. Stock your pantry and secure the moorings. Happy Solstice!!
